American children are behind pretty much every civilized country’s children when they graduate. In 1988, when I just started college, I had a friend in calculus class that was from Afghanistan. He had to kill Russian soldiers to protect his family and village WHILE he studied calculus in high school. Our class was doing work he did as freshman! (Our system wouldn’t accept his transcript from a “lesser” country.”) I was in the gifted math class as a senior and I had to drop calculus because I’d never even heard of calculus in school.

Don’t fret! The point is to challenge our kids, THEY CAN HANDLE IT! Most importantly, challenge them to be creative, they’ll blow you away. In fact, drop your ego and help them SURPASS you.

Here’s a specific tip: encourage them in the arts. Our new world needs creative people not data pushers. Creatives will rule the new economy. (Notice Apple growing and Microsoft stumbling.) Music is a wonderful way to encourage creativity. Music is mathematical, takes discipline, while it also exercises the right hemisphere of creativity and relationships.

Here’s a cool keyboard (typing and piano) I ran across for your PC (sorry Mac folks) that can help your kids learn music & play the piano. Sure beats them mindlessly learning how to play video games or Barbies. For around $50 you can quickly unplug your old keyboard and plug this one in. Change your PC’s keyboard and your kids can expand their soul. If you’ve got friends with kids, share the idea.

http://www.prodikeys.com/

Remember, KIDS CAN TAKE IT! Challenge them. Believe in them. Help them become great and STOP worrying about how much they like you.

Check out this video of a piano solo on this baby:

A clear example in the US is that 61% of Americans are obese. Obesity starts from not being able to make good decisions about food. This often forms in youth. The reason: the person is deciding about food from their feelings. The were not taught any other way to decide. The problem: good decisions are not made from feelings. So how are good decisions made?

Good decisions, those that support our long-term success and happiness, are made from clear criteria. Bad decisions, unsupportive ones, come from just feelings. How do you know if you are going by feelings or criteria? Simple. if they are criteria, you can write them down! Criteria are questions that tend to have a yes or no answer.

Here’s an example: Obese people tend to have an over simplified feeling question about food like: “Will is fill me up?”, “Will it taste good?”, or the BIG one: “Will it make me feel good?”

People with a naturally thin eating strategy will have a checklist like:
1. Will this food give me energy?
2. Is it healthy?
3. Will it make me fat?
4. Is it fresh?

If any of our criteria is a “no”, we stop. It’s a simple test list.

What’s the moral of this story? If you are having trouble deciding on ANYTHING, write down your criteria! Get our of the feeling test, which changes with mood, and actually write down your list. Make sure you sort the list too. Great criteria or sorted and the order makes decision quick and powerful.

Finally, you can use this with your friends and family. If they are stuck and can’t make a decision, check if they can write down their criteria. Let’s say you have a girlfriend that can’t decide on a guy… bet she doesn’t have criteria that can be written, instead she’d waiting for a feeling. Problem is, just a glass of wine can change feelings.

OK team! Here’s an idea worth literally billions of dollars for the first company to really capitalize on it. Social networking is here to stay. Solving problems is how we make money. Put these two together and a problem Facebook has created is worth billions to the first company to champion this idea. Watch the market for this to happen soon.

Here’s the problem: Who’s really your friend? A psychologist asked me this when i was young and it’s a great question. We humans actually must categorize people. Not everyone is truly a friend. Facebook has now introduced this problem because Baby Boomers have moved in as in any market. Now EVERYONE wants to be your friend. So you get invites from marketeers, your parents, random people you’ve never met, employers, and occasionally real friends. Since Facebook was designed for young people, who are focusing on being liked and making friends to do so, they missed this. This isn’t how adults actually work. Instead, we have levels of trust. Life requires trust until we live in a purely giving society.

The idea is for a new social network to let you categorize friends sociologically. Some are friends, some are acquaintances, some are business partners, some are family. Many don’t want their employers, or potential employers, looking at their family or friends. Reflecting how humans really work, and solving their problems, is how riches are made.

Could you write an add-in for Facebook? Or maybe launch your new network? Someone is going to solve this problem really quickly and get rich. If the Facebook crew said, “it’s already been done” they would have lost out on billions of dollars. It’s never to late do something better!

Check out this great article that tracks why MySpace lost market share and why Facebook may soon do the same. Baby Boomers are like locusts and we must watch their habits to find what they’ll consume next. Just give me a shout out when you cash your first big check.

In the interview on May 5th, 2009, Tony reminds us that life happens in cycles. Humans have been in civilization for 5600 years. We go through cycles just as everything in nature. But humans forget these cycles in our natural existence. We are now simply in Winter as we were 80 years ago, and have been many times over the centuries.

Even though we thought things were great these last few years America really was very challenged. These challenges were covered up by a kind of prosperity. Humans actually thrive and grow the most in adversity and this era will become an incredible gift.

But, Tony reminds us, we don’t get muscles by sitting on the couch. We’ve got to recondition our minds, bodies, and spirit. Modeling is one of the best ways we condition ourselves as humans. We did it when we were young, modeling language and habits. Models like Tony and others are essential for our own rapid progress. Tony never went to college and was once living in his car. He simply reconditioned his mind and learned strategies for thinking that turned life around. You can too!

http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7506072

Here’s a practical question for you today. What book are you reading today that will give you new skills for the shift we are in? Are you training for a new future or praying for someone to rescue you? Your answer will predict your future.
